BLACK SS - FOREIGN OBJECT

Black Sheep Squadron, more commonly referred to as Black SS, are a hardcore punk rock juggernaut from Assault City, NY (that's Syracuse to you).

Black SS come from the school of Negative Approach, Uniform Choice and Kill Your Idols. They keep things short and to the point. Much like their influences, Black SS are not afraid to say what they think. They do not mince words or get all metaphorical about whatever is pissing them off. After releasing a handful of seven inches and splits, they have finally delivered their first proper full-length via Reaper Records. Foreign Object is a 12-song, 19-minute record that starts off fast and never slows down.

These guys have a bit of an obsession with professional wrestling, as evidenced by the album art on both the front and back cover. In the realm of hardcore punk, Black SS are equivalent to Abdullah The Butcher. They are pissed off, wild and out of control just like the wrestling legend. Except instead of taking a fork to the head of Terry Funk, Black SS rip through tunes like "Bonehead" and "Have Some Self Respect," which illustrate their frustration on the current state of society and today's punk scene.

The opener "Quick Fix" addresses the dependence that people put on drugs and alcohol for an easy solution to life's problems. Vocalist Chuck shouts "go ahead and self-medicate, when you wake up the problem's still there." Instead of coming off as just another preachy straight-edge band, Black SS bring up very real concerns about addiction that should apply to everyone.

Foreign Object is a furious steel chair shot to the skull of today's hardcore scene. Take notice, because this is what hardcore punk rock should sound like.

BORN FROM PAIN - SURVIVAL

Since their last CD, 2006’s War, Born From Pain has undergone quite a few changes. Vocalist Che Snelting left the band, and bassist Rob Franssen took over the vocal duties. Andries Beckers joined the band as their new bassist, and they also have a new drummer, Roy Moonen.
With Survival, the Dutch band’s metalcore sound is fully intact. They change things up from fast and brutal to mid tempo and groovy. The aggression never abates, but neither do the catchy riffs. The dual guitars of Karl Fieldhouse and Dominik Stammen run the gamut from simple fills to fast thrashy riffs to creative solos.

Franssen’s vocal style is more hardcore than metal. The lyrics on Survival are very politically conscious, so it fits very well. The choruses are punctuated with gang vocals, and of course breakdowns are frequent and crushing.

There are some very well-written songs on the CD. Some of the standouts are “Sons Of A Dying World,” which combines great hooks and plenty of aggression, and “Zeitgeist,” a relentless and potent song that eases into a catchy groove. Born From Pain’s music remains rock solid, and the hardcore influences of Franssen adds even more punch to Survival.

DEATH THREAT - LOST AT SEA

Death Threat is an American hardcore punk band formed in Connecticut in 1997, originally intended to be a revamped lineup of the short-lived "Death Threat 89". With all new material and the only remaining links being a singer and name, Death Threat (without the "89") became a new band. Aaron Butkus, the lead vocalist, co-founded the band with guitarist CJ Klemonski, and the duo became the songwriting core of the band, until CJ's departure in early 2001.

Death Threat is known for their classic hardcore punk chants, riffs and breakdowns. 2009 brings great things to fans as the group is set to release its newest offering, "Lost At Sea." The recording is a four-song kick to the eardrum, a return to form that helped knock a genre on its ass.

GRAVE DANCERS - MORBID NATION

Grave Dancers (or "Pedansa Kuburan") are a political thrash metal/hardcore band from Jakarta, whose music is highly inspired by classical crust punk, d-beat and crossover. "Morbid Nation" is their debut full-length release, and it's quite good. The cover art is just excellent, somehow reminds me of the opening sequence of Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (the scene of a riot in Tokyo). Looks like there's a relatively big hardcore/thrash scene in Indonesia, but most of these bands are unknown to the whole world...

SNAPCASE - BRIGHT FLASHES

Snapcase is so damn good that I almost feel bad for them; it must be awkward to be so good at everything you try. Case in point: Bright Flashes, their latest "project," contains a few remixes that I figured would be total crap. I stand corrected. The entire album is strong, including the remixes.
Bright Flashes opens with a remix of "Believe/Revolt," which sounds like the original, but with some cool new drums added. The drums give the song more spunk than toughness, yet it is still a rather enjoyable remix. The remix of "Ten AM" is a lot spacier, but it still finds a way to rock out, in a Shape of Punk...-era Refused kind of way. The remix of "Exile Etiquette" is easily forgettable, however.
The rest of the album is made up of covers and songs that didn't make it onto the band's last full-length, End Transmission. Of these outtakes, "Dress Rehearsal" is probably the best. It has Refused-sounding guitars, without compromising that staple Snapcase driving feel to which fans have become accustomed. Their cover of Helmet's "Blacktop" is pretty true to the original. It reminds me how long it's been since I last listened to a Helmet album.

MADBALL - EMPIRE

FAST DOWNLOAD !!!

Madball "Empire" Good Fight Music

Music: same formula - no dramatic twist. Just the best hardcore you can have. NYHC. Two-steps and gang chants for the listener to become possessed by. Fast crunching riffs; mid-tempo beats with a hip-hop bounce. Head walks and chest pounds a plenty. The mixing is classic Madball - time changes and channel drops while Freddy screams that lead into breakdowns. Not chugga chugga and breakdown saturated; the main focus is one the importance of racing forward.

"Con Fuerza" has me throwing haymakers alone in my room and i do not know a lick of Spanish. The tracks "RAHC, "All or Nothing" that we got a peek at 2 weeks prior courtesy of Reaper Records got me picking up change. Invigorate, "Timeless", "Dark Horse" has me looking like a fool waiting for the buss as i shout at the telephone pole and point. i could go on - every song on this album kills. They are each made for the pit; and the revolution. Stand up and fight. And make sure this is your soundtrack.

SICK OF IT ALL - SCRATCH THE SURFACE

FAST DOWNLOAD !!!

Heralded as "the last remaining true New York hardcore outfit", New York's proudest sons Sick of It All always have and always will be the real deal. After releasing a string of important hardcore records including 1989's Blood, Sweat, No Tears as well as 1992's classic Just Look Around, SOIA decided to take the major-label plunge by signing with EastWest Records. Leaving the act to its own devices, the label wisely chose to let the band self-produce Scratch the Surface (its fourth effort). Unleashed at the height of Green Day/Offspring mania, the album was destined for major attention, but, alas, it never came. Featuring a classic New York hardcore sound (and one that is admittedly not for the masses), the album features 14 tracks including the hyper-speedy "Insurrection," live favorite "No Cure," and "Desperate Fool." The real surprise, however, comes in the shape of two incredible band anthems. For one, there's the transcendent "Scratch the Surface" (which featured a great, live-action video later carbon copied by Papa Roach on "Last Resort"). Secondly, there's the monstrous singalong (not mention big Beavis and Butthead re-current) "Step Down." With "Step Down," the label tried to position SOIA as its "next big punk band." Unfortunately, EastWest met with resistance from radio programmers who were all too busy looking for the next Green Day. When all was said and done, as was the case with the Melvins, Scratch the Surface sold about as well the band's other independent efforts (even though it benefited from two videos and some decent label commitment)

REIGN SUPREME - TESTING THE LIMITS OF INFINITE

Testing the Limits of Infinite is a testament to every thing that Reign Supreme is. From the beginning of the opening track ‘Mother Superior’ to the closing track of ‘A Ghost in a City’, Reign Supreme constantly barrages the listener with some of the most accessible hardcore in the genre yet still makes the ears bleed to listen to. From buildup to buildup, Reign Supreme knocks one out of the field every time the first note is hit… they never let up, give no respite and show little mercy to the listener. Taking influence from metal giants like Hatebreed and blending it with the punk attitude of bands like Shipwreck AD, Testing the Limits of Infinite showcases a very special blend of punk, hardcore, heavy metal and metalcore all in one disc. The first four tracks of the CD tend to flow seamlessly together, much to the kin of Converges newest release Axe to Fall, they could almost be considered the same song. The tracks ‘And Come What May’, ‘False Prophets’, and ‘Slipping Away’ also tend to blend in well together as well, making for a great and interesting listen throughout.

One of the downfalls of the album as a whole is some of the smaller tracks that tend to blaze right through the album. Tracks like ‘Crushed by the Weight’, ‘In Absentia’, and ‘Failure’ burn hot at first listen but are quickly forgotten after they are played. Also the album as a whole generally lacks in substance and originality. This is not saying that Reign Supreme is merely a copy/paste band, its just saying that when their own band members admit to being ‘a generic hardcore band’ it gets a little hard to take this album seriously in the long run.

But all in all, Reign Supreme has crafted a solid and respectable debut on Jacob Bannons’ label Deathwish. What they promised to improve from the debut American Violence has been made and the melody, intensity and crushing production will put this band in the front of today’s hardcore bands. No one could have asked more from a band like this, it will leave the listener satisfied from top to bottom with this band. While the redundancy in this album can be a little off putting for some, no one can deny that Reign Supreme believe in what they say and what they play and that they put a lot more into each record then most other bands.

STRUNG OUT - AGENTS OF THE UNDERGROUND

FAST DOWNLOAD !!!

Punk has been declared dead for years by those who still wait for the likes of Refused to regroup and Against Me to release another Reinventing Axl Rose. Albums like A Wilhelm Scream’s Career Suicide and Propagandhi’s Supporting Caste would in turn provide a very strong case to the contrary. Sure they may not sound like the Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, or early 90’s Bad Religion, but evolution is necessary for the genre to survive, and it so happens that evolving is one of the things Strung Out does best.

The band’s dedication on improving their musicianship, their focus on technicality, and an ever present hunger to explore and expand have led Strung Out from the catchy Warped Tour worthy punk tunes of Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues to the face melting tracks found on Exile In Oblivion. With their 6th album, Blackhawks Over Los Angeles, it finally seemed that Strung Out had found their comfort zone and that, like many bands before them, they would be destined to release different versions of the same album until finally calling it quits. This is the part where you listen to Agents of the Underground and feel like a fool for doubting the band’s creativity and will to evolve.

Agents of the Underground is fast, energetic and powerful. This time around, instead of adding lots of new elements or trying to bring in outside influences the band does the exact opposite, they synthesize themselves. The album contains the energy and melodies of Teenage Wasteland and mixes it with the power and technicality found in Exile and Twisted by Design. They also found the way to keep an outstanding balance in their melodies and song structures. They succeed in bringing heaviness and speed without the need to sound like a frustrated metal band while at the same time keeping the songs flowing with smooth precision. Songs like “Black Crosses”, “Ghetto Heater” and” Dead Spaces” are all excellent examples of this.

In the end, Agents of the Underground turns out to be the most complete album of Strung Out’s career. By using their own beginnings as influence Strung Out has managed to create something more refreshing and cohesive, and after 15 years and 7 albums that’s something to be proud of. The fans who love the metal-like Strung Out will still favor Exile, and the ones who love the melodic punk/pop-punk anthems will still favor Teenage Wasteland, yet in spite of that, by their evolution coming full circle, Agents of the Underground will probably turn out to be the defining album of their career.
